Retiring in Asheville

Asheville often tops the lists of top places for various reasons- Barrons says we’re #15 on the “Top Places for Second Homes” and US News & World Report named us one of “10 Best Places to Retire.” Delightful, relatively mild seasons and an abundance of warm southern hospitality probably has much to do with Asheville becoming a retirement destination. Whether you prefer traditional medical facilities, alternative healing practices or a combination of both, you’ll have top notch practitioners to choose from.
A Haven for Active Seniors
Our close proximity to the ocean (4+ hours) and the major cities of Charlotte (2 hours) & Atlanta (3.5), add to Asheville’s convenience. If you’re a golfer, or would like to become one, you’ll have plenty of award winning golf courses from which to choose. Kayaking, hiking, bird-watching, gardening are just a few of the abundant outdoor activities. Art comes in many forms here, from music to pottery, live theatre to painting, handmade clothing, award winning jewelry and more. It comes frequently in the form juried exhibitions and week-long fairs.
Not sure exactly how to decide where to retire or even if retirement is right for you? Consider joining NCCCR, the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement. They sponsor a weekend event dedicated to lectures, speakers and opportunities to meet other like-minded folks--visitors and locals alike--who want to better understand why “This Is Not Your Parents' Retirement.”
Retiring to a Better Way of Life
Of course, not everyone who is looking to retire in Asheville is a Baby Boomer. Consider those who are “retiring” from the big city, high stress environment to raise their families in a slower, more relaxed lifestyle. And the Mature Retirees, who are still interested in an active lifestyle with an eye towards the possibility of needing varying degrees of assisted living.
We have found that many of our retiring clients are moving for the first time in decades. Many haven’t purchased a home in over 30-40 years and have been in the same home and/ or community for most, if not all, of their lives. The enormity of this move can easily overshadow what should be an exciting and fun time. Our experience and patience can help make your retirement move one you’ll look back on with a smile.
