How to Select a Contractor
Doing your homework before building and remodeling can save dollars and headaches. Ask these important questions before selecting your building or remodeling professional
- Does the builder have a good reputation with local banks and suppliers
- How long have they in the business? A min of 3- 5 years is needed to establish a solid reputation, to follow up on warranty and service work.
- does the builder have sufficient workers compensation and general liability insurance? If not you could be liable for site related accidents on your property.
- Will the builder provide you with references of prior customers? Ask if prior clients would rehire them.
- Have you seen the builders work? Both completed and in-progress. Stop by and check up on other work-sites.
- Are you able to communicate effectively with the builder? Remember that you will be in close contact with these people until your job is done.
- Ensure that the builder provide you a complete and clear contract. Reviewing it together – can eliminate future issues.
- Be cautious of the really low bid. If the builder is unable to pay for materials and labor as the the job goes along, this will indicate a potential problem.
- Check with your local Home Builders Association (HBA) to find professionals who are licensed general contractors in North Carolina
- Be sure to check with your local Better Business Bureau. They can alert you to any red flags with potential builders. Better Business Bureau
